3.4 Assignment: TED-Style Talk Reflection Journal: Positive Psychology
Getting Started
Throughout the psychology program, you have been learning and writing about ideas for your TED-style talk, incorporating various aspects of what you learn in the different courses. You will continue in that vein in this workshop, reflecting on how positive psychology and what you have learned thus far in this course may impact your talk.
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
· Integrate insights from the Hero’s Journey and positive psychology to reflect on learnings from the course thus far for your TED-style talk.
Resources
· None
Background Information
In previous courses, you were exposed to both the Hero’s Journey and the fact that you will eventually develop a TED-style talk to submit in the last course in this program. In this journal entry, you will continue thinking and writing about your TED-style talk by creating a narrative that incorporates some of what you learned about interviews and interventions as well as what you have learned about positive psychology thus far.
You will add this as a new journal entry to the TED-Style Talk Reflection Journal you began in PSY-520.
Also, remember that you have a call with your instructor in Workshop Six.
Instructions
1. Open your TED-Style Talk Reflection Journal that you have saved in a Word document.
2. Title this new journal entry “PSY-545 3.4 Positive Psychology < Day, Month Year>.”
3. As you write in your journal during this session, reflect on the following prompts/questions:
a. How do you view your Hero’s Journey at this time? What has changed? What would you like to change?
b. How has what you have learned about life coaching and positive psychology and I/O psychology helped you in thinking about what your TED-style talk might consist of? In what ways?
c. What else have you learned from this course thus far that has influenced your ideas for a TED-style talk? Be specific.
4. Your entry should be a minimum of 400 words.

3.3 Assignment: Engagement Interview
Getting Started
Evidence-based coaching requires thoughtful analysis and assessment of a client’s situation and goals. You must also be aware of common interventions, as well as have a proclivity to be curious about newer interventions or, perhaps, how to apply older intervention models. You should have in your toolbox a portfolio of different tools and methods. Not only should you be versed in interventions, you should also have a sound and thorough understanding of the theories underpinning the interventions. Finally, you must have a way to evaluate your interventions. How will you determine whether your client(s) achieved their goals or truly completed their program with you with a positive outcome? Without a sincere and thorough evaluation, how will you determine your effectiveness as a coach?
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
· Analyze the engagement interview.
· Select and justify an intervention based on the scenario for the engagement interview.
Resources
· Your Kaltura video from Workshop Two
Background Information
For this assignment, you will evaluate your skills in the interview video you created for Workshop Two. Use your peers’ feedback from the discussion in this workshop if you find it useful. In addition to critiquing your skills, you will also determine an intervention you might use, keeping in mind your specialization and that you aren’t engaging in clinical psychology but, rather, life coaching from a strengths or positive psychology perspective. Identifying an intervention will assist you in the interview video you will create for Workshop Five. You will need to do some library research for this assignment.
Instructions
1. Watch the interview video you created in Workshop Two.
2. Write a minimum three-page, APA-formatted paper addressing the following:
a. Which skills were you attempting to demonstrate?
b. How well do you think you demonstrated them?
c. Given the scenario, identify an intervention you would use with the person/situation in the scenario and provide justification for why you would use that intervention.
d. Describe the evidence for your selected intervention.
e. Describe the contraindications or lack of evidence for your selected intervention.
3. As part of the paper, you will need to identify sources that support your main points. Please provide two outside references, in addition to any references from your readings, in correct APA format for these sources in a reference page at the end of your paper.

3.2 Discussion: Peer Review of Interview Video
Getting Started
Often, we are our own harshest critics. It is difficult to evaluate our own work with any type of objectivity. Inviting others to provide suggestions, identify strengths, and offer feedback is one of the most valuable things we can do to improve ourselves and our work. A strength that you can build on or enhance is to be open to peer review and suggestions. Obtaining a diversity of perspectives can be such a contribution to personal and professional growth.
A valuable way to help others provide you with suggestions is to offer some guidance to them on what you are looking for. Rather than saying, “Tell me what you think,” provide specific questions or areas that you want your peers to comment on. For example, “I wonder if I was too forceful in this interaction. Do you agree or disagree?” This helps both you and your reviewer focus on specific areas rather than having feedback be too open or broad, which can stymie helpful suggestions because your peer may not know where to start or what to focus on. None of us is perfect, so be as open as you can to gaining the perspectives and input of your peers.
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
· Provide peer review of engagement interviews.
Resources
· Your Kaltura video from Workshop Two
· File: Using Kaltura CaptureSpace (Word)
· Video: Submitting a Video in My Media into BrightSpace
Background Information
One of the most effective ways to learn and improve is to gain peer feedback and suggestions. For this discussion, you will post the interview video you created and submitted in Workshop Two. You will then review all your peers’ videos and provide suggestions on at least two of them. Please be kind! You are learning how to become skilled at interviewing, but you are not expected to be advanced in those skills at this time. Constructive but gentle suggestions are warranted. When providing feedback, focus on the prompts provided.
Instructions
1. Watch all of your peers’ videos and provide commentary on at least two of them, reflecting on the following at a minimum:
a. How well did your peers utilize positive psychology concepts?
b. How well did your peers utilize strength-based concepts?
c. Provide at least two suggestions for your peers.
d. What are at least two strengths you noted in the videos?
2. Your postings should:
a. Be well developed by providing clear answers with evidence of critical thinking.
b. Add greater depth to the discussion by introducing new ideas.
c. Provide clarification to classmates’ questions and insight into the discussion.
d. Be posted on three different days during the workshop.

3.1 Discussion: Love Incarnate, Love Divine
Getting Started
Consider the following passage from John, Chapter 19:
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
John 19:28–37
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
· Share what it is like for you to read about the crucifixion of Jesus.
Resources
· Bible
Background Information
You decide to go back to town. It is Preparation day, the day of the Passover, the day commemorating the time when Moses took the lead over thousands of Israelites fleeing from the evil pharaoh in Egypt. Passover. Preparation. The Last Supper . . . the Passover meal. Your mind flashes back over the generations. Eating the Passover meal, sharing the Passover cup, and now learning that Jesus did say “Do this in remembrance of me.” What does this mean?
Is Jesus our Passover Lamb? Did Jesus come to not only fulfill prophecy but to fulfill tradition and to actually embody the symbolic rituals put in place long ago? Perhaps he is the Messiah! Perhaps he is love incarnate. Perhaps he is love in the purest form, the most divine existence.
Instructions
1. Read the devotional on this page, “Love Incarnate, Love Divine.”
2. Navigate to the discussion topic and respond to the following:
a. Return to your place of quiet and silence. Get out your Bible and read aloud about the crucifixion of Jesus. Read it for yourself. Read it to yourself. Allow yourself to hear your voice and to take in the spoken word.
b. Share what it was like for you to read the crucifixion of Jesus.
3. Your postings should also:
a. Be well developed by providing clear answers with evidence of critical thinking.
b. Add greater depth to the discussion by introducing new ideas.
c. Provide clarification to classmates’ questions and insight into the discussion.
