You give a good interpretation of the first sentence.  How does the first relate to Marx's overall argument?  As for the second, what process made technology as a keyword? Why is it a keyword? What is mean t by "the changing character of contemporary society and culture?   Let's look at the third question.  What does it mean to say that the "oncoming age" can be described by one word ("machinery")?  How do the second two sentences relate to your understanding of technology?  How does each sentence relate to your understanding of writing?  An author named Morton Winston points to six essential characteristics in every technological system.  First, it is a human activity-form, namely, the particular techniques that humans have created to form technologies. Second, it is the tools and technologies produced to make new products or artifacts. Third, it is the artifacts or products created by such tools and technologies. As you can see, there is a symbiotic relationship between tools and artifacts, because an artifact itself (for instance, a hammer) can become a tool for another artifact (a shelf). Fourth, and most intriguing, technologies serve different functions (or valences). Winston calls this polypotency, or the varied uses of an artifact (for example, a hammer could be used to murder someone). The fifth aspect of technology is the factual knowledge about the universe that informs the making of the technology. And the final characteristic is the social setting of science itself. Science does not operate in a vacuum and is dependent on other social systems to survive (for example, schools and corporations). These are the social technologies that are necessary to create the artifacts of technology.  Does Winston's definition work?
