Purpose

Customer satisfaction is one of the main goals for any organization that wants to continue in business. It is important for the organization to understand the requirements of the customer and to determine if its processes are capable to meet the customer specifications. Process capability ratio (Cp) and process capability index (Cpk) are means for determining the process capability and if the process can meet customer specifications.

A company producing canned tuna, specified the weight of each one range at 140 g±0.70 g. As a normal part of production monitoring, control charts were kept for each specified against specification limit. A request from the sales team for tighter limits prompted the question of whether the limits could be reduced to ±0.35 g, as this could result in significant orders from a new customer.  

Use the Cp and Cpk to determine if the process is currently capable. Then use the new limits to determine if the process will be capable to meet the new customer specifications.

N.B. the data collected for 25 groups with subgroup size 4. You will need to calculate σ=Ṝ/d2.
