Food Label lab about Bio
I would like you to collect 4 food labels (5 pts each) from items that you most commonly eat (this can be anything- food or drink). For each of your food items, I would like you to analyze and discuss the following components of each food (use your lecture notes, slides and textbook to help you) :
-Is your item a good source of fiber, vitamins and minerals? If so, which ones?
-Which macronutrients are in this food item and how much of each? (protein, carbs, fats).
-Does this food provide you with good or bad fats? (unsaturated vs saturated and trans fats). How much cholesterol?
-Does the food packaging attract its consumers by using phrases that indicate the food is "healthy"? (refer to the above links for common food packaging statements). Ex: "All natural", "fat free".
-What are the top ingredients used in your food item? (Remember, the first ingredient is the one that is MOST in the food, followed by the second most and so on). Do you see words like "partially hydrogenated" and other unrecognizable chemicals?
