Assessment type;

Critical review

Word limit/length;

1500 Words (+500, including in-text citations, reference list, any tables/figures and appendices)

Assessment overview

Students will write in an academic manner, drawing from the literature, on a particular workplace experience. This exercise is intended to build skills in critical self-reflection and personal growth and to develop both theoretical and applied competencies related to self-awareness and self- management.

OR

Use Case Scenario in FLA Assignment A PowerPoint Presentation

Remember : Your Role Function in the case scenario on Multi-Disciplinary teamwork (MDT) PowerPoint presentation has Psychotherapist/Counselor.

OR

However, if there is no possibility of relating the assignments to the workplace, please describe the work in general terms and/or consider the case hypothetically.

Learning outcomes

This assessment task is aligned to the following learning outcomes:

· Critically evaluate the internal and external factors affecting the ways in which health workers interact with each other and the effect this has on client safety

· Understand the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviour and compare concepts, theories and models of social and emotional intelligence.

· Critically evaluate the emotions and behaviours of self and others to enable learning from experience.

Assessment Details and Instructions

Identify an occasion at work recently when you were aware of experiencing heightened/increasing arousal (Read Sec Reading 1 - 11).

Steps:

a) Describe the incident including:

1. The context – what was happening just before you noticed the increased arousal?

2. Who was present (use pseudonyms) and what were their roles in the incident?

[approx. 250 words]

b) Reflect on why you think your arousal increased? (Examples could be: “I felt threatened because I realised the others thought I was at fault… [expand]” or “I was very excited because X praised me in front of our whole team… [expand]”).

[approx. 150 words]

c) Now for some structured reflection on the objective and subjective experiences of the incident and on the relationship between how we think, feel, and behave.

Complete Tables 1 and 2 below by taking time to really consider the details of what happened.

-Please include these as tables with the headings in bold as outlined below. Take care to differentiate between objective content (which is completely factual and observable without including your interpretation) and subjective content (which includes the way you interpreted things or felt about things).

-Try to draw from the literature where appropriate. Use the attached material on as a start point to find further resources.

-These tables are included in the overall word count. (approx. 1000 words for this section

Table 1. A reflective exercise on the effect of our emotions on our behaviour.

Emotion

Describe in as much detail as you can the emotions you experienced during the incident (there are likely to be at least a few – often many).

Behaviour

Describe your behaviour in objective terms – what did you actually do and/or say?

How did emotion influence behaviour?

Now analyse the different ways your behaviour was linked to those emotions. It can help to think how your reaction/behaviour differed from what might have happened if you had no emotional reaction at all – or from the way you would advise someone to act when you are unaware of any emotional content (i.e., the completely rational, best-practice way).

Table 2. A reflective exercise on interpreting behaviour.

Behaviour

Describe the other person’s (or people’s) behaviour in objective terms – what did they actually do and/or say?

Interpretation and emotion

Describe how you interpreted that behaviour and what emotions that elicited in you.

Alternative interpretation and emotion

Now try to come up with an alternative explanation for the behaviour described in column 1. If you had interpreted the behaviour that way at the time, what emotions might it have elicited?

16

d) Consider one or more models of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and linking to the literature, identify at least 2 domains of EI that relate to the incident you described in FLA assignment PowerPoint Presentation Q1. You may also discuss Cultural Intelligence (CI) if relevant/appropriate.

-How do those EI/CI skills relate and how might improving them help equip you if a - similar incident occurred in the future? [approx. 500 words]

Using information from workplace

However, if there is no possibility of relating the assignments to the workplace, please describe the work in general terms and/or consider the case hypothetically. If using any real information from your workplace, it needs to be secondary (e.g. online report) not primary (e.g. conducting interviews) as this would require ethical application. De-identify information where necessary.

What is included in the word count

It is an important academic and practical skill to be able to communicate succinctly. It is expected that students will adhere to the word limits and not exceed the prescribed limit including in-text citations and the reference list.
