Universal Basic Income
Wake up! It’s your 20th birthday and your parents have decided it’s time you took on some responsibility. All your financial burdens come raining down on you at once. You have no clue how you will pay for your stay at college, afford to eat, and juggle school all at the same time. According to an article from a CQ Researcher called “Universal Basic Income,” a student Cassandra experienced a great deal of financial freedom due to the SEED Program. Where She was given 1,000 monthly so she was able to focus on school without the worry of how she would pay for her life expenses and enjoy being a young adult (Collier). What I find amazing about Cassandra's story is she is a young mom going off to college and can enjoy it without struggling to pay bills or work a job. Most people often work and go to college, usually having to drop out and take care of their families. Fortunately, we have citizens working to help more young adults receive help, which is called Universal Basic Income. Universal Basic Income in America results from income disparity, but a solution such as monthly income may offer relief.
First, at its core Universal Basic Income is a form of social security or unemployment in which young adults receive monthly income at a set amount, intended to improve equality, protection, and support for citizens of the U.S. According to an article from CQ Researcher “Universal Basic Income”, “ Yang argued that a UBI is needed to address income disparity, stagnant wages and job losses from automation” (collier). With Universal basic income, all citizens of the U.S. receive 1,000 a month as a guaranteed income. It provides citizens with protection against sudden job losses and support for stagnant wages, and every citizen is given the same amount of diverse equality.
Secondly, Universal basic income has grown since the pandemic in 2020. During covid-19 families struggled so badly because of job losses or cut hours that executives stepped up to create programs to ensure families don’t fall below due to unpredictable circumstances. The pandemic really highlighted how American families weren’t financially stable they were one paycheck away from being in financial ruin (Chavez). Without the impact of the pandemic families would be still unnoticeably financially unstable.
Finally, Universal basic income’s primary purpose is to reduce poverty by providing a safety net for all citizens. Giving money to those in need with no strings attached. The idea has been pitched since 2020 and even proven after the pandemic, that it can help American families in big ways. Since then, many places have pushed it to become permanent and a safety net for citizens (Could Universal Basic Income Help End Poverty). With a little help from the government, they can solve economic poverty by giving them little income with no strings attached. Ensuring all families have incomes and don’t fall below.
Universal basic income represents the approach to addressing economic inequality and insecurity. By providing citizens with guaranteed income, it aims to promote financial stability.

WHATLOOKINGFORFINALPAPER.docx
The Introduction:
1. What is the reader's "hook?" In other words, how does the introduction paragraph begin? (The hook should probably be a STORY involving your term; look at the CQ Researcher articles as examples!) Do you have any suggestions for improving it?
2. Is the hook the right length? A hook that is only 1-2 sentences is too short; 5-10 sentences is a much better length for the hook.
3. What is the thesis statement? Does it avoid announcement? (Remember, announcement is a 10-point penalty! An example of announcement would be: "In this essay, I will explain...") The thesis should not be a dictionary definition, but in the writer's own words or quoted from a source.
4. Does the introduction paragraph include a definition of the term? If the definition is in your partner's own words, no citation is needed. If the definition is taken from a source, there should also be a parenthetical citation. Is there?
The Body:
1. After you read this essay, do you have a better grasp of what this term means? Be honest!
2. In the essay, do you see examples of both denotation and connotation? Point out an example of each.
(a) Denotation (the literal definition):
(b) Connotation (words that create a positive or negative feeling about the term):
3. Look at the first body paragraph. Does it start with a clear topic sentence? ( The topic sentence must never be a direct quote or a paraphrase! If the first sentence of the paragraph is a quote or a paraphrase from a source, please tell them here.)
4. Does the rest of the paragraph follow the guidelines for writing a paragraph? There should be a supporting point, then a quote or a paraphrase from a source. Next there should be a sentence of explanation of that quote or paraphrase. The rest of the paragraph should repeat this pattern until everything has been said about that topic.
5. Are the quotes and paraphrases easy to understand? Are there appropriate transitions? Is it clear that the writer understands what they're quoting or paraphrasing? Explain.
6. Find an instance in which the essay paraphrases a source. Copy and paste the paraphrase here:
Is the paraphrase integrated into the essay well? In other words, is there an introductory phrase? Is it clear why the information is being included in the essay, or does it feel extraneous?
Is parenthetical citation used correctly? Remember, the punctuation that ends the sentence should come after the parenthetical citation.
Example:
Members of the Millennial generation and Generation X are more like to get tattoos than any other demographic (Jones 68).
Note: Remember that CQ Researcher articles must include page numbers. NPR and PBS Newshour articles will not have page numbers.
7. Find an example of where the essay directly quotes a source. Copy and paste the direct quote here:
Is it clear why the information is being quoted directly, or does it feel extraneous? Is there a sentence or two either immediately before or immediately after the quote that explains how it relates to the essay?
Is parenthetical citation used correctly?
Example:
“Thirty-six percent of Millennials and 40% of Gen X have at least one tattoo and many have multiples” (Jones 68).
Note: Remember that an in-text citation will NEVER include the name of a source like CQ Researcher or NPR.org. If there's no author, the title of the article, in quotation marks, should be in the in-text citation, like this: ("Title of Article").
8. Are there any instances where the essay mentions a fact without attributing it to a source? Copy and paste them here:
Note: Remember, everything that is not common knowledge MUST include a citation; otherwise, it is plagiarism, and will result in a zero F.
9. Are there sufficient signal phrases? Is it always clear whether the information is coming from the source or from your classmate? Copy and paste anything that you feel would benefit from a signal phrase here:
(An example of a signal phrase might be, "According to John Smith...")
10. Interesting info: Does the essay focus more on specific stories than general information? (Be honest!)
Remember, specific stories with lots of detail are what will make your essay interesting to read. Think about the essay we read about cohabitation; the story of "Jennifer" made that essay much more interesting.
11. Point of view: Does the essay avoid second person (you, your)? Remember, there will be a 10-point penalty for any use of 2nd person! Copy and paste any sentence that includes "you" or "your":
Does the essay avoid first person (I, me, my, our, us, we) as well? Remember, there will be a 10-point penalty for any use of 1st person! Copy and paste any sentence that includes a first-person pronoun:
The conclusion:
1. Is the conclusion paragraph short? A good conclusion paragraph is only 2-3 sentences.
2. If the conclusion paragraph is longer than 2-3 sentences, what would you cut?
The Works Cited page:
1. Are there any sources listed that are not from CQ Researcher, NPR, PBS Newshour, or Academic Search Complete?
2. Place a 'Y' ’if the statement is true or an ‘X’ if the statement is not true.
· Is the information in the heading in the right order?
· Is the date written Day/Month/Year? Ex., 7 October 2024
· The whole Works Cited page is left-justified, and each entry uses the hanging indent
· Works Cited is centered at the top of the page in 12-point font.

· There is no bold type or ALL-CAPS used in any citation entry.
· The source (e.g., PBS Newshour, CQ Researcher) is in italics
MLA Format:
· Is the essay double-spaced?
· Are there any lines? There should be no extra lines skipped between the heading and the title, between the title and the introduction paragraph, or between paragraphs.
· Is the whole essay, including the title, in Times New Roman, 12-pt font?
· Is there any bold font? If so, it needs to be removed!
· Is the MLA heading correct?
· Are the margins 1" on all four sides of the page?

Using this discussion board, we will submit a rough draft of Essay #2 as an attachment and conduct a peer review. Try and submit a complete essay; be sure to include all of your in-text citations and a Works Cited page, as the entire reason for the peer review is to double-check our citations. In fact, if you submit an incomplete essay that is missing in-text citations or a Works Cited page, I may not assign you a peer review partner, and you will miss out on those 50 points.
Click REPLY to this discussion board, then use the paperclip icon to attach your paper as an attachment. (Please do not try and use the built-in Google Docs feature built into Canvas; it rarely works. Instead, if you're using Google Docs, download your essay as a Word file first, then post it here as an attachment.)
Once you have submitted the rough drafts, I will post a course announcement pairing everyone with a partner for the peer review. I will also post a list of specific review questions. Find your partner's essay, read it carefully, then answer all of the peer review questions thoroughly. Also, please feel free to email me with citation questions!
I will also provide quick "at-a-glance" feedback to your rough drafts, so watch for my assignment comments.
Please try and complete the peer review as quickly as you can so that your partner will have ample time to finish revising and editing before the final draft of Essay #2 is due.
NOTE: This is our first research essay, which means you must include correct in-text citation and a Works Cited page. Any essay that lacks either will receive a zero F. Also, any information in the essay without a citation that is not common knowledge is considered plagiarism, which will also result in a grade of zero F. Serious cases of plagiarism will be reported for Academic Dishonesty. I have includes lots of notes, video lectures, and quizzes in the Essay #2 module to prepare you. Learning these rules is up to you! (Remember that first discussion board about self-directed learning!)
Any final draft without in-text citations or a Works Cited page will automatically receive a grade of zero.
If you reference sources that you do not then include in your Works Cited page, that is also considered plagiarism and will result in a grade of zero.
Any essay that uses Chat GPT or other AI tools will receive a zero F and will also be reported for Academic Dishonesty, which may result in a failing grade in the course.
The essay must be typed and in MLA format.
It must also cite at least 3 scholarly sources, making sure to use proper MLA citation both in the text and in a Works Cited page.
Your 3 sources must come from CQ Researcher, Academic Search Complete, NPR.org, andPBS.org/Newshour.
You may use more than three sources, but they can only come from one of these sources listed; information from any other source will be considered plagiarism and result in a grade of zero. CQ Researcher is absolutely required as one of your sources. Failure to include CQ Researcher will result in a zero F.
Do NOT use the dictionary, an encyclopedia, or Wikipedia as a source.
