Subjects:Jesus Christ -- Nativity; Bible. Luke 1-4; Bible. Matthew 1-4; Bible. Gospels -- Criticism, Textual; Bible. New Testament -- Manuscripts; Virgin birthScripture Citation:Matthew 1; Luke 2Abstract:In some recent English translations of the New Testament, the modern dominance of the Neutral text has been challenged with the adoption of a few Western readings. Fifteen textual variants affecting the doctrine of the virginal conception in Matthew 1 and Luke 2 are discussed agai st the background of early church theology. The Western tradition does not present a coherent recension, but a catechetical method of transmission whereby the biblical text can be changed to reflect current theological concerns. By contrast, the Neutral tradition is relatively stable, proving faithful in substantive matters to a very early recension of the Gospels.Publication Type:ArticleGenre:Peer reviewedIssued by ATLA:09/03/2017Availability:http://catholicbiblical.org/publications/cbq(Publisher's URL:)Accession Number:ATLA0000775621Database: ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerialsNotes:This title is not held locally
