Objectives
- Identify the use of figures of speech, symbols, allegory, irony, and/or sound in a poem
- Describe how these elements affect interpretations of the poem
Instructions
1. Choose one of the following four poems:
o Jim Stevens' “Schizophrenia”
o Martin Espada’s “Bully”
o Alexander Pope’s from “An Essay on Criticism”
o Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky”
2. Use as many of the elements of poetry as you find useful (but a minimum of two), to describe the effect of the poem. You should also include a paragraph describing how you would interpret the poem.
