Biological, Psychological, and Social Factors Influencing Psychopathology

Psychopathological disorders result from interactions between biological, psychological, and environmental elements and are not due to one single factor alone. Biologically, risks may be associated with genetic factors, abnormalities in brain neurotransmitters and functioning, and other factors. For example, there is an established connection between genetics and schizophrenia, bipolar, and major depressive disorders (NIMH, 2024). Other biological factors affecting mental health may include abnormal levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which influence mood, cognition, and behavior.

Psychological aspects should not be overlooked either. They involve thoughts, emotion regulation, personality characteristics, and individuals' personal experiences. Distortions in thought patterns, experiences of trauma, attachment difficulties, and maladaptive behaviors may negatively affect coping mechanisms, thus impacting mental well-being (Beck & Dozois, 2020). Stressful experiences in childhood, such as neglect and erratic upbringing, may affect emotional development adversely, increasing the risk of suffering from anxiety disorders, depression, or personality disorders.

It is equally crucial to consider social, cultural, and interpersonal determinants along with biological and psychological risks. Poor socioeconomic conditions, discrimination, poor family life, and lack of access to healthcare may contribute to heightened stress levels and inadequate support systems. The culture in which a person lives shapes their expression, perception, and treatment of mental health conditions. Social interactions may either alleviate or exacerbate stress (WHO, 2023). This demonstrates the idea behind the biopsychosocial model, according to which mental health disorders have multiple causes.
