The U.S. Department of Homeland Security uses facial recognition at numerous airports across the U.S., as well as other public places or gatherings.

The ACLU has filed a civil lawsuit claiming that the use of this type of surveillance poses a threat to civil liberties and free speech (for example if used to identify protesters wearing masks).
