PAPER TOPIC

Read the following article (pdf is posted under the “Readings” folder on Canvas):

• Ruggles, Steven.  2015. “Patriarchy, Power, and Pay:  The Transformation of American Families, 1800-2015.”  Demography 52: 1797-1823
• Paper 1 Reading attached

After reading the article, use the article to write a 3 to 4 page essay that answers the following three questions.

1. How has the structure of American families changed from 1800 until 2015?
2. According to the article, what factor or factors account for these changes?
3. According to the article, how did these changes alter power relations within families?

FORMATTING

• Your paper should be essay format, 3 pages, double spaced, with 12-point font and blue or black ink. Please use a professional font (Garamond, Times New Roman, Cambria, Verdana are good fonts to use).
• Include a header with your name, the date, and the title of the course.
• Please include page numbers anywhere on your paper.
• You DO NOT need to include references or a works cited.

GRADING

 I will be grading your paper based on how clearly and thoroughly you answer the three questions.
