Guidelines for Paper Assignment 2

Length: between 2-4 pages long (double-spaced)

1. DEFINING SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS. 20 pts.

In your own words define sociological concepts of bean pole family structure and sandwich generation discussed in class.

2.  EXPAINING THEORETICAL CONCEPTS.  20 pts.

Briefly explain how bean pole family structure and sandwich generation affect the caregiving of the elderly by their families.  

3. APPLYING SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES TO REAL LIFE EXAMPLES.  40 pts.

Do a library search and find one newspaper articles about gangs(****see the instructions on the bottom of the page on how to do a library search).  Based on the information contained in the article, explain the causes of young people joining violent gangsby applying one sociological theory of deviance and crime.  (You should locate several articles on gangs and then pick one that you think is most relevant for this assignment).

4. COMMUNICATION, ORGANIZATION, BIBLIOGRAPHY, GRAMMAR,  20 pts.

Any sources of information used for this paper must be citedusing proper format.  To receive credit you must acknowledge all sources of information you have used for this paper (for example, quotes from the newspaper articles, the PowerPoint lectures, textbook, or other sources) in the body of your paper as well as in the bibliography section at the end of your paper.  Since it is a very short paper, I don’t expect you to use many (if any) quotes (they should be no more than 20 percent of your paper). Any form of plagiarism will be penalized by a score of zero.  

You will not receive credit for using online encyclopedias (Wikipedia, etc.) or personal blogs as your source(s) of information.

You will be graded based on the basis of your understanding of the concepts, ability to properly apply concepts and theories to real life examples, paper organization, as well as effective communication of ideas, proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

The paper has to be submitted via the Assignments link in Canvas on or before the due date.
