  1. Consider your Focus: is it clear that you are focusing on an international issue or is your topic limited to a certain population (e.g. Rohingya), border (e.g. U.S.-Mexico) or region (e.g. Mediterranean)? Consider the examples being used; one thing that can happen is to discuss the issue as international but only bring in examples from one border, which gives the reader the impression that your paper is about that border only. You want to make clear whether or not your focus is national, regional, or international. This is very important as it sets up a focused direction for the solution section.
  2. Consider the Research: are you bringing in relevant and effective information in appropriate places? Could it use some personal experiences, statistics, outside authorities, and/or factual references and examples? Where? Also, do you include research requirements outlined on the essay prompt (from the book Violent Borders, the LPC databases, and other sources)?
  3. Consider Reader Response: Put yourself in the position of the reader. Does the draft draw you in with compelling details that create a sense of emergency to address the issue? What could be added to create or add on to this?
