  • Homework – Othello Act 2
  • Respond to the following question using MLA in-text citations and direct quotes of lines from the play to support your answers. Be sure that you use a signal phrase (subject and verb) to introduce the lines from the play. 

  • How to format your answer: For a verse play like Othello, list the act, scene, and line numbers, separated by periods. Use Arabic numerals and separate the numbers with periods.  Please sure to put the punctuation at the end of your sentences. Here a few examples.

  • In his famous advice to the players, Hamlet defines the purpose of theater, "whose end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature" (3.2.21-23). – example of direct quote
  • In Shakespeare’s King Lear, Gloucester, blinded for suspected treason, learns a profound lesson from his tragic experience: “A man may see how this world goes / with no eyes” (4.6.148-49). 

  • When Hamlet confronts Rosencrantz and Gildenstern, he tells them that he “is not easily played upon” (3.4.127). 
  • Signal Phrase Verbs
  • Introducing quoted, paraphrased, or summarized material requires a signal phrase, and signal phrases require verbs. Here are some commonly used signal phrase verbs.

  • As Act 2 progresses, fears of the characters become more apparent.  State what the specific fears are of 2 characters and how they influence that specific character’s behavior.  Be sure that you write at least a one page response for the question. Use the original Old English Shakespearean text to complete your answer. DO NOT use the No Fear Shakespeare modern English translation as part of your answer.
