 This will be a 5 page (app 1500 words double spaced, 1 inch margins) essay comparing and contrasting the types of societies/cultures depicted in the Tale of Kieu and Child of All Nations. Clearly, one major difference is that one depicts pre-colonial Vietnam and the other represents colonial Java/Indonesia. But beyond this obvious difference, what kinds of people and social groups do the works represent for us? How does this influence our views of the respective societies? What kinds of themes appear to be important in each work? How do these reflect the way their authors understand their respective societies? What details of everyday life, society, and culture are represented in each and do these show similarities and/or differences between the two represented societies? These are some of the questions you will want to answer as you write your essay.
