Evolution of Typographic Design

The introduction of the early graphic communication (like playing cards in Chapter 5 and the early book designs in Chapter 6 had a significant impact on education, organized religion, and written languages. But as showed in the video lecture, typography (letterforms and styles) changed.

Questions:

· Why do you think the evolution in typography (Chapters 7 and 8) was important? That is, why was the shift away from a calligraphic (handwriting) styles to modern typefaces (as well as changes to page layouts and book design) important?

· What impact did it have on society (Economic, Political, Social, etc)?

· From the fonts we explored in the text and named the video, if you had to choose, what are your favorites? Why do you like them and under what circumstances would you use them? Is it about the time period it was made in and identifies that time period? The aesthetic? How it is used now? Please explain.
