COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In this course you will be introduced to the various genres of literature and expository writing. You will develop communication skills for academic purpose and the skills necessary to write papers analyzing literature. The second half of the course is devoted to the development and organization of the research paper. Note: Successful completion of this course satisfies the All University Requirement (AUR) ENGL 102 English composition II.

Prerequisite: ESL 101 English Composition I: ESL

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:

1. Student can demonstrate the ability to critically examine an issue and to exercise grammatical control in writing a well-structured expository essay.

2. Student can write a meaningful and grammatically competent comment on a piece of literary work.

3. Student understands and can demonstrate the mechanics of academic writing, and the techniques of documentation according to MLA conventions.

4. Student can understand the direction, orientation and general meaning of a piece of academic writing.

5. Student can demonstrate oral proficiency in academic and workplace settings.

6. Student can demonstrate and understanding of the various functions of the computer that are related to college-level writing and research.

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

1. Analyze a piece of literature that demonstrates an understanding of basic literary terms, such as plot, setting, character analysis, theme, symbolism.

2. Write a well-formed thesis statement.

3. Construct an objectively-supported argument in contrast to an essay based on personal opinion.

4. Document a paper according to standardized guidelines.

5. Know how to use the library and the Internet to find and evaluate objective sources.

6. Be able to give effective short oral presentations.

REQUIRED TEXTS:

EVALUATIONS:

A letter grade of A, B, C, D, or F will be given in this course, with plus or minus grading.

Your grade will be computed as follows:

Essays 60%

Research paper 10%

Oral presentations 10%

Homework 20%

Grade Scale: A = 97-100 C+ = 77-80

A- = 93-96 C = 73-76

B+ = 89-92 C- = 70-72

B = 85-88 D = 66-69

B- = 81-84 F = 65 & below

DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENTS:

A minimum of four (5) essays are required. Writing assignments are typically in response to a reading, with an emphasis on analysis. You will be given feedback on content, organization, grammar and mechanics. For all papers, you will be permitted to revise for a higher grade. A printed copy of a scholarly Literary Criticism must be presented on the first day of each Essay assignment.

Writing assignments must be typewritten (double-spaced). They must be no less than 2 pages in length.

2. Reading

Homework is due at the beginning of every Thursday class, submitted thru Blackboard. Late homework will not be accepted.

Readings will be on short stories with sufficient time for revisions. Due dates will be posted on Blackboard. A full letter grade will be deducted for EVERYDAY that the essay is late.

Speaking

Although this is a writing course, the ability to clearly communicate your ideas verbally is an important aspect of learning English in an academic setting. To this end, I will incorporate speaking into class in the form of oral presentations and learning vocabulary appropriate for an academic setting. You will be required to learn four (4) new vocabulary words approximately every three weeks from the 100 Words dictionary, to be used in the oral presentations.

3. Literary Research

In order to develop the skills necessary to successfully complete the required research paper, Literary Research assignments will be required throughout the semester, called Literary Research Reports (LRR’s). These will involve practice in finding and using a variety of electronic sources related to your topic from the NJCU library’s electronic databases. A minimum of four (4) LRR’s will be due by the end of the semester.

4. Research Paper

The research paper process begins fairly early in the semester. For the topic, you will be writing about one of the themes of the readings/oral presentations this semester. Papers must follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) style of documentation, which will be covered in detail in class. Like the essays, all research papers must be typed. The research paper has a required length of 4 pages (minimum), and will be due the week of final exams. Your paper MUST incorporate secondary sources (to be discussed in detail later) or your paper will automatically be given a C grade.

More on the research paper later except for one final word now: Sources from which specific ideas, phrases, or sentences are used cannot be copied without citing the author. To do so is plagiarism, and will earn you a grade of F for the research section of the course.

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION:

Since this is not a lecture class, there will be a great deal of discussion in small groups and with partners. Therefore, you must attend class regularly and participate as much as possible. Lack of participation, attention in class, and poor attendance will absolutely lower your grade for the course. Being absent for three classes will lower the final grade by one full letter. Each next absence will also lower the grade by one-half a letter.

EXPECTATIONS FOR CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:

No cell phone use in class

No computer use unless I authorize it.

No excessive chitchatting (either in English or your native language).

If you feel you cannot follow these basic courtesies to your professor and your classmates, I suggest you change to another EC 2 section during the add/drop period.
