Summary Writing Guidelines

A well-written summary:

• Identifies the author, title, and source of the reading • Identifies the writer’s main points/main idea • Includes the most important supporting ideas • Identifies how the writer makes these points (e.g. tells a story, describes a situation,

provides statistics, etc.) • Is 15% to 25% as long as the original piece • Is written in the student’s own words • Is written objectively, and therefore does not include the student’s observations,

evaluations, or interpretations • Makes frequent use of signal phrases

A Suggestion for students:

• Pack a lot of information into your first sentence, including the author and the title of the piece that you are summarizing.

First Sentence Examples: o In her essay “Nature’s Awesome Beauty,” Meno Miyake discusses how a trip to

the wilderness of Alaska changed her views and perspectives about nature. o In her article “Class of 2001,” Rosa Garcia highlights important moments in her

high school career by describing the thoughts and memories that go through her head as she takes part in her high school graduation.

o In her essay “Growing Up in Cabrini Green,” Genette Lee describes her experiences moving into and living in the projects from age eight until her senior year of high school and explores the effects this experience has had on her.
