The East Asian civilizations developed in different ways than those of Mediterranean countries. The Asian methods and developments in printing, paper, and writing were the foundation of the modern book that we have in today's western society. The ancient methods may seem "odd" to us today, but remember without their ingenuity long ago, we wouldn't have the current technologies today.

In this discussion, consider how the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, and Burmese technologies were similar and how they were different.
