The play "Trifles" by Susan Glaspell was written and played in the 1900's. It was set in a small town and took place in a lonely little farm house. The house is cold, Gloomy and left disheveled. The way the kitchen is described as "a gloomy kitchen, and left without having been put in order—unwashed pans under the sink, a loaf of bread outside the breadbox, a dish towel on the table—other signs of incomplete work" (Glaspell,1916) suggests something happened suddenly. This was written in a time where women were viewed as nothing more then home makers. The description of the house suggests that who lived there was lonely and distant from those outside. The play takes place on a very cold day and the descriptions of the house being dark lead you to believe that its later in the day. The era and the mood in the house definitely tie into the main idea of this play which was weather or not a woman killed her husband. Being that men in that era didn't think of women as equals to them it makes the story line even better when they are the ones to actually figure the case out.
