William Jay Smith: American Primitive 1953

"There he is in a shower of gold" line 6, symbolizes the dad was wearing plenty or a lot of gold. Shower is a symbol of water pouring over you. It's also a symbol when it's raining and its raining pouring over us. The word shower helps us image there is gold, money, so on pouring over him. Another way I see it as if just getting out of the shower you smell nice and look good. He is wearing an expensive clothing, shoes and jewelry. Gold symbolizes sharp, shiny, and costly. Reading more into the poem it helps me understand the dad has plenty of money and was able to look sharp with gold and smell nice. His pocket was stuffed with money. "I love my daddy like his loves his dollar" The beginning the author describes the dad's image. How well dressed he was and he has money in his pocket. The dad needs money to be able to keep up with his image and to keep money in pockets. Money is his love and means a lot to the dad.
