Module 6 Graded Learning Activity #2 Applying Research t

Biographical details about the author of a work of fiction can often give reader's insight when it come to analysis. Edgar Allan Poe, in particular, led a very troubled life full of struggle, tragedy, and even addiction. Taking Poe's life into account, it is easy to see why so much of his fiction is rooted in the "horror genre," and why there seems to be a decided lack of optimism present in any of his noted works.

Use the Internet and the research skills you mastered with the Research Paper to brush up on Poe. An excellent starting point can be found here: Link (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

After you've uncovered some information about the author, share some thoughts on what life events may have influenced a story like "Cask of Amontillado." One point of interest that I've always been very drawn to is the interesting name and fate Poe delivers to the character Fortunato. Note how closely Fortunato's name resembles the word "fortune," something that Poe, himself, spent most of his life lacking. Just food for thought as you guys read up on one of the most widely read authors in American Literature!
