ENG 130 Module Two Written Response Exemplar Audience Understanding
Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.
Selected text you will use for your project: “What Everyone Needs to Know to Be More Productive” by Dana Rousmaniere
Identify an audience for your project: The people who need this information include employees of any size business, business owners, and people just starting in their careers who need advice. I think the information could also be useful for college students, especially those who also work or have children, because they also need to manage their time better and treat their college work as paid work. Therefore, I’d like to focus on employees as my first audience.
Identify a second audience for your project: Business owners or managers could also use this information and include it in new employee training or as advice in their employee management. For this reason, I’d like to focus on staff managers as my second audience.
Describe the writing situation for your project: Since my project writing situation will focus on evaluating and analyzing the article for these two different audiences who are connected to workplace situations, I’d like my project to focus on workplace issues and concerns in 2022, especially the way the workplace is changing.
Explain why each audience is appropriate for the content and writing situation: Both audiences are appropriate for the content and writing situation of my project, because in my project, I will focus on analyzing an article about productivity in the workplace. My analysis of the information in that article would meet the needs of both of my audiences. For example, my analysis could help employees understand the information in the article, which could help them be more productive at work while managing their energy levels. Similarly, staff managers could use my analysis when developing trainings for their employees or when leading their teams to be more productive while practicing healthy habits. It will be interesting to think through how to customize the paper for each audience.

Selected text you will use for your project: “What Everyone Needs to Know to Be More Productive” by Dana Rousmaniere
Identify a possible primary audience of the text: If I return to my thinking in week 1, the core idea is “being productive is important, but equally important is creating a balance between productivity and regular life in order to remain fresh and energetic for both.” The primary audience for this core idea might be people in the workforce who find it difficult to create a work–life balance. This could be adults of all ages who are in the workforce.
Identify other possible audiences for the text: Other possible audiences for the article might be managers of people who struggle to find work–life balance, HR staff, and workplace wellness staff. The families of workers who find it difficult to be both productive and have energy for regular life might also find it useful.
Explain why both possible audiences (primary and other) are appropriate regarding the genre of the text: It’s a persuasive and informative article, so it can help persuade any of these audiences, and the information could be useful and valuable in its own way for each specific audience.
Explain why both possible audiences (primary and other) are appropriate regarding the writing situation of the text: When I look back at the purpose I wrote about in Module One, I said that the author wrote the article to educate readers on the useful and not-as-useful productivity tips. I also said that the topic looked into self-care as well as productivity in the workplace. The two audiences I’ve listed for the article are both connected to workplace situations, so the writing situation is appropriate to inform and persuade both audiences.
Describe how the writer attracts and guides the audience: The writer provides specific examples, is strictly informational, and offers links to articles that detail each example offered.

ENG 130 Module One Reading Response Exemplar Interviewing the Text
Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.
Choose the text you will use for your project. Then, explain why you chose that text: For my project, I have selected “What Everyone Needs to Know to Be More Productive” by Dana Rousmaniere. I chose this text because I found the topic useful, and I can apply aspects of it to my real life.
Identify the topic of the text: This article is about how to be more productive in the workplace and in your life, but it’s also about self-care and how to maintain a balance between productivity and mental health and rest required to do good work and be a better person.
Identify the genre of the text: This is a persuasive and informative article that evaluates other information about productivity. So, it combines the genres of persuasion, explanation, and evaluation.
Describe the writer’s purpose: The author seems to have written the article to educate readers on the best and most popular productivity tips as well as popular tips that are not as useful.
Determine the historical context of the text: This article was written in the early twenty-first century, a time when workers in the West felt they were competing with AI, technologies, and each other. As a result, people want to be more productive to be more competitive in the workplace and as earners.
Determine the cultural context of the text: This article was written within the contexts of business culture and productivity culture. Evidence for this is the publication itself ( Harvard Business Review) and the sheer volume of articles the author read and condensed to share the highlights of productivity practice.
Identify the core idea of the text: Being productive is important, but equally important is creating a balance between productivity and regular life to remain fresh and energetic for both.
Identify details of the text that are relevant to the core idea: At the start of the article, Rousmaniere (2015) supports the idea that productivity is important: “we can all benefit from learning to ramp up our own personal productivity” (p. 2). Later in the article, the need for balance and non-productive time is emphasized: “You can often get more done by focusing less on work and committing to less. So, by all means, take a break, regroup, and come back with renewed energy and focus” (p. 4).
