COURSE DESCRIPTION

The objective of this course is to understand, explore, and analyze the linkages between gender and the environment. Using multiple case studies food, waste, identity, climate change etc.), the course will focus on two core themes: 1) foundational concepts and theories of gender as they relate to the environment and 2) the inequities and power dynamics associated with environmental challenges. By thinking critically about these concepts, we will challenge our current understanding about complex, global environmental challenges, the meaning of gender, and why it matters today and in the future. In particular we will examine not simply gender as a monolith but instead an interconnection of identity and culture in an intersectional fashion.

This interdisciplinary course exposes students to key theories and concepts for understanding the relationship between gender and environment. Drawing on development studies, geography, science and technology studies, sociology and animal studies students will develop a critical understanding of scholarship and action regarding the symbolic and material dimensions of gender-environment relations..
