This needs to be redone asap as it is not a Toulmin essay and is not close. You are doing some sort of thematic analysis, as you mention, but that is not what I asked for!
· please review planning and revision assignments
· backing, qualification, rebuttal work a differently than you have them now
· you need to plan for the claim grounds warrant in each paragraph (that's the planning assignment) and then FILL them in for a draft. filling in means 3-5 sentences for grounds and 3-5 sentences for warrant.
· overall, I need to understand why you like the movie
· lead with best movie ever
· give backing for that, which should have a PERSONAL warrant, your main way of thinking that leads to you saying BEST
· qualify YOUR DEBATABLE statement about best by narrowing the argument-->is this perhaps the best movie from 80s or best about prison????
· rebut by thinking of another movie that seems to do something similar but that is not as satisfying
· Toulmin allows you to FOCUS on one angle of argumentation (one reason that it's so great) and just clarify and defend that
· thematic analysis is more analytical and not as debatable in the required way. I want you simply to prove that this is BEST MOVIE EVER.

Prewriting for the Toulmin Essay
1. What are five favorite movies, books, games, or TV shows?
· The Shawshank Redemption (film)
· Black Panther (film)
· The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (book)
· The Last of Us (video game)
· Breaking Bad (TV show)
2. Choosing one of these, tell us briefly why it is your favorite.
My favorite movie is The Shawshank Redemption since it is the most vivid film detailing the power of hope and perseverance in the face of systemic injustice. The main character Andy Dufresne maintains his dignity even when he is incorrectly imprisoned, thus the character is used to recognize how humans can exercise their resilience and moral strength even in the most repressive situations.
3. Who are five of the most influential people in your life?
· My mother
· Nelson Mandela
· Barack Obama
· My high school English teacher
4. Choosing one of these, briefly explain the influence on you.
Nelson Mandela has had a lot of influence on my understanding of the value of justice and forgiveness. The fact that he was committed to reconciliation after decades of being imprisoned showed that an effective leadership does not depend on vengeance, but the restoration of humanity (Napier, 2020). His philosophical beliefs inspire me to deal with conflict in the most empathetic and long-term view.
5. What are five important actions that any U.S. citizen should undertake to strengthen society?
· Vote regularly in local and national elections.
· Volunteer in community service projects.
· Educate oneself on civic issues and media literacy.
· Advocate for environmental sustainability.
· Promote social inclusion and respect for diversity.
6. Choosing one of these, briefly explain how that action can strengthen society.
Prejudice can be reduced by promotion of social inclusion and respecting the diversity and this reduces cooperation between communities. Through active discrimination confrontation and multiculturalism, citizens strengthen the unity of the country and instill the trust in the democratic institutions. An inclusive society turns out to be more innovative, well established, and fair.
7. From all your notes above, choose one claim to strengthen by putting together claim and rationale.
Claim and Rationale
“Promoting social inclusion is essential for a stronger society because diversity fosters creativity, reduces inequality, and builds collective resilience.” The evidence can include research studies that have validated the claim that different organizations outperform homogenous organizations in innovation and decision-making. Moreover, social inclusion will ensure every citizen invests his or her talents in the national development, thus culminating in enhancing democracy and economic growth.

Part A. Mandatory draft of the Toulmin essay (Per)
Make sure that you've done the prewriting and planning / outlining assignments for the Toulmin essay before attempting this draft. Remember that this is a mandatory draft: you must attempt it to pass the class.
You will need to work with YOUR OUTLINES from the planning assignment and thereby create three paragraphs that follow (in this order)
· backing
· qualification
· rebuttal
Instructions
The draft needs to preserve the outline structure, adding flesh but not changing the focus. Think of each CHUNK above (grounds, warrant, or any other sub-piece) as needing 3-5 sentences of elaboration. You can prepare for that elaboration loosely by asking yourself the pertinent question (what is the best evidence for this claim? how am I interpreting that evidence to reach the claim? etc) and then bulleting or free writing.
Use the planning document to also plan TRANSITIONS between the paragraphs, showing the relationship between parts or how your larger argument grows through each paragraph.
I grade each paragraph as follows:
* 85% for unity or focus through claim, grounds, and warrant
· 15% for transitions and build between the paragraphs in order to create coherent argument overall (there is one overarching claim for this essay such as "Breaking Bad is best show ever," and every paragraph builds part of that argument
Part B Planning / outlining the Toulmin essay
Goal: to identify key components of your essay before creating full paragraphs! (make sure to do this before attempting the draft)
Make sure that you understand the Tolumin approach to argumentation before attempting this draft. Remember that the entire plan here, and the eventual essay, all supports one major claim, the one that you settled upon in the prewriting from last week.
Your three paragraphs will all have claim, grounds, and warrants as the basic constituents of a paragraph, AND the relationship of these paragraphs to each other will be (Make sure you've reviewed the Toulmin components in the earlier assignment):
· backing
· qualification
· rebuttal
Instructions: fill in these three charts with the minimal information, not writing but just PLANNING the paragraphs.
EXAMPLE
|
Connection between this paragraph and your overarching claim? Be sure to list the overarching claim here. |
This paragraph will be backing for the big claim that Breaking Bad is best show on TV |
|
Claim (debatable statement that can be proven true or false) |
The quality of acting on BB is unparalleled. |
|
Grounds (best evidence for the claim) |
Describe the performance by Bryan Cranston when he watches his partner's girlfriend die. |
|
Warrant (interpretation of how the grounds leads to claim) |
Explain how this nuance was normally found only in movie acting, which entered TV in a new way with BB. |
