Part A. Mandatory draft of the Toulmin essay (Per)

  Make sure that you've done the prewriting and planning / outlining assignments for the Toulmin essay before attempting this draft. Remember that this is a mandatory draft: you must attempt it to pass the class.

You will need to work with YOUR OUTLINES from the planning assignment and thereby create three paragraphs that follow (in this order)

· backing

· qualification

· rebuttal

Instructions

The draft needs to preserve the outline structure, adding flesh but not changing the focus. Think of each CHUNK above (grounds, warrant, or any other sub-piece) as needing 3-5 sentences of elaboration. You can prepare for that elaboration loosely by asking yourself the pertinent question (what is the best evidence for this claim? how am I interpreting that evidence to reach the claim? etc) and then bulleting or free writing. 

Use the planning document to also plan TRANSITIONS between the paragraphs, showing the relationship between parts or how your larger argument grows through each paragraph.

I grade each paragraph as follows:

* 85% for unity or focus through claim, grounds, and warrant

· 15% for transitions and build between the paragraphs in order to create coherent argument overall (there is one overarching claim for this essay such as "Breaking Bad is best show ever," and every paragraph builds part of that argument

Part B Planning / outlining the Toulmin essay 

Goal: to identify key components of your essay before creating full paragraphs!  (make sure to do this before attempting the draft)

Make sure that you understand the Tolumin approach to argumentation before attempting this draft. Remember that the entire plan here, and the eventual essay, all supports one major claim, the one that you settled upon in the prewriting from last week.

Your three paragraphs will all have claim, grounds, and warrants as the basic constituents of a paragraph, AND the relationship of these paragraphs to each other will be (Make sure you've reviewed the Toulmin components in the earlier assignment):

· rebuttal

Instructions: fill in these three charts with the minimal information, not writing but just PLANNING the paragraphs.

My favorite movie is The Shawshank Redemption since it is the most vivid film detailing the power of hope and perseverance in the face of systemic injustice. The main character Andy Dufresne maintains his dignity even when he is incorrectly imprisoned, thus the character is used to recognize how humans can exercise their resilience and moral strength even in the most repressive situations.

3. Who are five of the most influential people in your life?

· My mother

· Nelson Mandela

· Barack Obama

· Malala Yousafzai
