On pages 34-35, Ruiz gives an example of a little girl who was told she had an “ugly voice” and who became embarrassed to sing thereafter. Have you ever been told something that, like the girl in the example, made you begin to reject parts of yourself? What was it and who said it to you?

Ruiz says that he “doesn’t have the need to be accepted,” which allows him to be immune to other people’s comments and judgments (51). In what ways have you allowed your need for acceptance to shape your life and personality?
