Include important biographical facts about the author:

  • Date of birth,
  • A list of the author’s major works,
  • An overview of common themes and issues addressed by the author, and/or
  • Any other information you feel is important (photos, etc.).  birth, birthplace, education, occupation).

Provide a SUMMARY of the selection that mentions the main characters, actions, events, and conversations.  The following tips maybe helpful in preparing the summary portion of your presentation:

  • Does the summary immediately identify the name of the author?
  • Does the summary immediately identify the title?
  • Does the summary avoid the use of “I,” so that the reader understands the ideas are those of the readers and not of the writer preparing the summary?
  • Does the summary discuss the story without commenting on them?
  • Does the summary discuss the story in the correct tense (generally, the present tense)?
  • Is the summary mostly in your own words except for a short quotation or two?
  • Does the summary include quotation marks for any phrases of three or more words borrowed from the reading?
  • Does the summary include parenthetical citations/page numbers for any quotations (include quotations in a summary sparingly)?
  • Does the summary accurately sequence the order of events in the story?

In a well-developed paragraphANALYZE a significant quotation in detail.  Consider choosing a quotation that illustrates an important theme, reveals something about one of the main characters, includes figurative language, an important development in the plot, etc.  Please use the following format:

  1. Begin with a topic sentence that gives the quotation some context.
  2. Quote the passage, properly introducing your quotation.
  3. Include 3-4 sentences of analysis discussing the significance of this quotation.

Be sure to include any and all websites and sources consulted in preparing your presentation; for instance, if you consulted the author bios available in your textbook, cite the bio (written by the editors of your textbook).
