*implied reader: the hypothetical reader that a work is addressed to. In other words, what kind of reader is assumed by the author and illustrator? Someone of a particular age? A particular nationality? A particular gender? A person who has special knowledge? One who lives in a particular time period? What conventions do the writer and illustrator assume their reader will be familiar with? Who would read this manga and understand it completely and enjoy it? The term “implied reader” comes from reader response theory.
