Assignment 2:  Fact-based  opinion essay

Purpose: To develop a thesis into a five-paragraph essay of opinion

Choose ONE of the three thesis-statements from week 1 or write a new one.

Your task will be to write  500-750 word essay developing this thesis statement

1. Your thesis Paragraph will be an introductory paragraph of 5-6 sentences, with a 3-point THESIS SENTENCE
2. 5-6 development paragraphs, developing the supporting points of the thesis.
3. You will include at least TWO citations per paragraph and appropriate references (APA format; see

1. Claims – what are you claiming?
2. Reasons – what reasons do you have for believing your claim?
3. Evidence – what evidence do supports your opinion
4. Some contrary point that might be used against your argument

Consider all writing assignments as "drafts." You will likely be asked to resubmit and improve. Your draft includes the following elements:

• 500-600  wds, TWO COPIES, using Grammarly.com or some other software assist
• Tested thesis statement with 3 points
• Stated opposing views
• Supported your view with Specific textual evidence (cited and referenced)
• UNDERLINE THESIS

In academic writing, the following style points will deduct from the marking:

• Dummy subjects (there is,  there are, it is)
• Use of Passive Voice ("The essay was written by the student")
• Pronouns (I me we us you your; unsupported  pronouns this, that, them, those)
• Rhetorical cheerleading: I believe, I think, it is my opinion, I feel, clearly, obviously, etc)
• Lack of citations, references, or incomplete APA format.
• Use of thesaurus and inappropriate words
