Discuss with students how they feel about the term English language learner.  Do you agree with the author’s use of the term English language learner?  What are the implications of using different terms such as limited English proficient, English as a second language, limited English speaking, second language learners, non-English speaker, and potential English proficient? (If you wonder why the label is important, remember people-first language and the use of the terms Negro and colored and the implications of those terms.)
