Inclusive Environments That Support Challenging Behavior

Along with utilizing strategies that support challenging behavior, we also must create environments that set children up for success. One piece of this is planning an inviting space that is inclusive and encourages socially and culturally responsive behavior among children. Another piece is incorporating routines, transitions, expectations, and procedures that encourage appropriate behavior. The final piece is ensuring that the environment is inclusive of the needs of all learners.

To prepare for this assignment,

In a four- to six-page paper,

  • Describe how you will set up the physical environment so that it is conducive to preventing challenging behaviors and is inclusive of all learners.
    • Include at least two examples of specific places in the room that will be designed to support children with challenging behavior.
    • Support this section with a reference to one of the behavior theories that we discussed in Week 1.
  • Summarize the importance of clear expectations and a predictable daily routine in creating an inclusive environment that meets the needs of children with challenging behavior.
  • Explain two routines and how they will help with behavior management.
  • Explain two transitions and how they will help with behavior management.
  • Discuss two teaching strategies that you will incorporate into your learning environment.
    • Provide a rationale for how they will help to support challenging behavior.
