Outside Resources and Curriculum Development
Although outside services are not the main factor in designing curriculum, the information provided by third parties plays an important role in creating developmentally appropriate curriculum since the information shared by the other professionals helps provide better insight into the learning needs of the child. The ECE practitioner then uses this information, combined with the information collected through their own observations and discussions with families to create the learning experiences for the child.
When you consider the wide variety of learning needs in a classroom, the additional information provided by outside resources allows you to gain a broader understanding of unique challenges and developmental areas that may otherwise have been overlooked. It is not possible to be an expert in every area of development, which is why it is important to seek information from others who have more experience in a specific area. By using multiple resources, you can create curriculum that enhances the learning environment for all children in your care.
The following video provides an example of collaborating with families. This website provides educators with resources and ideas to support classroom practices across diverse settings. As you view the video, consider how you support collaboration in your own practice.

Supporting Families
In additional to resources that can support your classroom and the curriculum design process, resources found outside of the classroom can support the families of children with special needs. For example, children who need additional services or testing will need referrals to outside agencies. Many organizations that serve special needs populations often form partnerships with early childhood agencies to support the children in the program. These resources benefit the children and families in the program and provide support beyond what is available by the ECE professional. As an ECE provider, knowing what resources are available and connecting these with the families who need them is a major role.
Common resources in the community include early childhood intervention programs, speech and physical therapy services, medical and developmental testing, and counseling services.
Providing resources to families allows the parent to better support the learning goals, since everyone understands the needs of the child, which allows for better collaboration. The following video provides an example of how you can support the needs of children by strengthening the family-school partnerships.
Strengthening Partnerships to Support Babies with Special Needs
As you move through this module, consider what local resources you have available to support families in your area. How can you connect with these resources to enhance the instruction for children with special needs?
This informative video is a good resource for supporting babies with special needs.
5.WhyUseOutsideResources.docx
Why Use Outside Resources?
Using outside resources is an essential part of curriculum planning, especially for children with special needs. Not only do outside resources provide you with new perspectives and ideas, they can also add to the learning environment with concepts or support that is beyond what an ECE professional has access to in their setting.
Common outside resources can include websites or community organizations which relate to a specific need of a young child in your care. For example, a child with a mild learning disability might benefit from resources available from a local college that specializes in educational programs related to their developmental needs. An ECE professional can reach out to the head of the program and get ideas or strategies which would align with the needs of this one child.
Another example might be an online education forum in which professional share experiences and ideas from their own classrooms and ask advice from those working in the field. This allows individuals to collaborate with others who have worked with a variety of children and specific developmental needs to gain insight into strategies that could meet the current needs of the children in their care.
Locating Resources
There are a variety of methods to locate resources and with the growing availability of online resources many individuals can easily locate materials related to the needs of the children in their care.
Head Start offers many resources for educators and families to enhance their understanding of specific disabilities. The following Parent Center Hub website provides brief overviews on specific disabilities that can be helpful to teachers and families.
Suggested Activity
If you have Pinterest account, take a moment to search using key terms related to ECE and special needs. For example, you might search for preschool activities and ELL (English Language Learners). This will provide you with some creative ideas that can benefit this specific population of learners. Although this is not a professional organization, it should give you an idea of the range of resources available to you and what may be relevant for the children in your care.
