Education in “Everyday Use” & “The Lesson”
Both Toni Cade Bambara and Alice Walker agree that education is absolutely critical in fighting racism and socio-economic inequities in American Society. However, they know that more education comes with a cost, because it creates divides within families and communities. Write a six paragraph essay that analyzes the ways in which education complicates the relationship between the characters in “Everyday Use” and “The Lesson”. You might consider how education, or the lack of it influences one’s understanding of pride and heritage, as well as other themes that both narratives share.
