Scenario 1 – School
|
Extended Scenario from Project Guidelines and Rubric You are interacting with a diverse group of peers this term who come from different cultures, socioeconomic statuses, ability levels, learning styles, career goals, and more. You are tasked with creating a guidebook that details the importance of social justice, cultural awareness, and communication strategies in the school setting. Your guidebook will begin by introducing the concepts of social justice in relation to the school setting. Then, it will describe how having an awareness of culture and diversity can positively impact communication and collaboration in school. Finally, it will model how to navigate one of the following conflicts by applying interpersonal communication strategies and restorative practices. Your guidebook will be passed down to new students.
Conflict #3 – Determining priorities
You are a first-year college student and are feeling overwhelmed by the demands of the coursework, extracurricular activities, and your part-time job. You have a lot of assignments and projects due in the coming weeks, and you are finding it difficult to balance everything while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle and social life. Your close friend recommended that you meet with your academic advisor. Your academic advisor is from a different culture than you and suggests that you leave your part-time job. However, you need the job to help pay for college tuition and to remain in college.

Module Seven Guide
Congratulations on making it to week seven of this eight-week course!
In this module, you will reflect on all the things you’ve learned up to this point. You will complete your project in this module, which is an exciting launching point for the rest of your time as an online student at SNHU. As you continue your journey at SNHU, you’ll be able to look back at this project and see the progress you’ve made and reflect on the knowledge you’ve gained. Remember, you can do this!
As you reflect on what you have learned so far, you will use that knowledge to complete your project. That might seem a bit challenging, but do not worry. Many of the assignments you have completed so far in this course are directly connected to the project, and you will be able to use the information you gathered for those assignments to fill in the project template.
For a refresher about which assignments align directly with your project, please review the Course Map . A text-only version of the course map is available: Course Map Text-Only Version . The project draft assignments you completed in Modules Two, Three, Four, and Five will be particularly helpful in completing your project.
We’ve covered a lot of material in the last seven weeks. As you begin to complete your project, it may be helpful for you to review a few key concepts. The first key concept to review is social justice. This includes the core principles of social justice; the difference between justice, fairness, and equality; and how bias and different narratives in society can influence your perception of social justice. You can review information about social justice in the Module One and Two Guides.
The second key concept to review relates to intercultural communication and collaboration. This includes reviewing how an awareness of other cultures and exposure to diverse backgrounds can benefit communication, the benefits that diversity awareness has relating to collaboration, how you can demonstrate cultural fluency, and how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness. You can review information about intercultural communication and collaboration in the Module Two, Three, and Six Guides.
The third key concept to review relates to communication strategies for navigating conflict. This includes reviewing the components of conflict, different interpersonal communication strategies that can be used in conflict resolution, how to choose appropriate communication strategies depending on the situation, the potential challenges of communication, and the benefits and challenges of using restorative practices to navigate the conflict. You can review information about communication strategies for navigating conflict in the Module Four and Five Guides.
As you work on filling out your Project Template, it’s important to incorporate any feedback you’ve received on these prior assignments about areas that needed clarification; information that was missing; and corrections to grammar, spelling, and so forth. What may have been a minor point deduction in an earlier assignment may result in a larger point deduction in the project.
This is the only assignment in this module, so you’ll have all week to review previous assignments related to the project, revise and edit them based on feedback you’ve received, and then use that material to complete the project template. If you have any questions, be sure to reach out early in the week so your instructor has time to get back to you before the project is due.
Key Concepts
Taking time to reflect on feedback is key when working to improve and grow.
· Did you notice any common issues mentioned in the feedback you received during the course?
· What are some key points you want to focus on improving from now on?
Incorporating suggestions and feedback allows you to improve the quality of your work.
· How can you ensure that you incorporate all the feedback you’ve received on prior assignments in order to submit the strongest possible project?
The ability to reflect on your work and effectively implement feedback are important skills that you will need in both your academic and professional careers.
· Can you think of any instances where you might need to implement feedback in your future career?

Module 3 Part Two: Elevating your Cultural Fluency
Identify your chosen scenario.
Scenario 1- School
Conflict #1 -Disagreement over feedback or grade from your instructor
1. Describe how you would demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario.
Clearly showing cultural literacy in this situation is more than just being able to speak a language well. As an international exchange student, I would be very aware of how different cultural norms might affect how I talk to my professor about a disappointing grade. Recognizing and getting the reasons behind different social norms is an important part of being culturally fluent. This means paying attention to both what is said and what is not said that conveys meaning. To show that I am culturally fluent, I would first learn about the host country's rules for giving and receiving academic comments and participating in class discussions. This includes knowing proper manners, including body language, touch, and eye contact. With this knowledge, I could manage my meeting behavior and obey academic body language guidelines.
I would plan to enter the meeting with an open, polite mind. When I tell the professor about my grade issues, I should respect their knowledge and expertise. Being culturally fluent helps me balance politeness in these situations. This keeps the conversation cheerful and helpful, making grade issues a good fit. I would also demonstrate my cultural fluency by understanding how language obstacles affect others. I would use scholarly language and avoid jargon to communicate properly. This should help me fill language gaps and improve my teacher's conversation. Cultural fluency is knowing both spoken and unspoken language, which improves communication and respect. Therefore, it would be important to work on both aspects for the benefit of the interaction with the professor.
2. Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness.
Being culturally fluent helps me learn a lot about myself by showing me how different cultural settings can affect my views, behaviors, and communication styles. Being culturally literate helps me understand and respect the different points of view that may affect both the grading process and my expectations when I talk to my teacher about a disappointing grade as an international exchange student. One important way that cultural fluency helps me become more self-aware is by showing me my own cultural ideas and biases. I acknowledge that we do not have the same cultural ideas as the professor. Knowing that different cultures may have different ideas about school, feedback, and grades makes me think about how my past might affect how I see things. This includes what I was used to in my previous cultural settings. Being aware of this keeps me from judging quickly or thinking there is a single way to grade academic work that works for everyone. It makes me keep an open mind about the situation and realize that what is considered good speech or good academic performance in one culture can be very different from what is considered good in another.
Additionally, cultural fluency can be beneficial because it can allow me to think about what I prefer and how I relate with others. This can allow me to take up a language that fits well with other cultures. This can be essential because it can enhance my ability to communicate with the professor. It would allow me to be more accepting of his reasons and ideas and the expectations he has about my performance. Moreover, being culturally fluent also makes me humbler in my relationships with others. I can value the richness of diversity and the chance to learn from others more when I realize that my cultural lens is just one of many. Being aware of this makes me curious and motivated to keep improving myself as I try to understand how ethnic differences affect my school experiences better. Being culturally fluent is like having a mirror in my life. It shows me not only how different the world is but also how complicated my own culture is. This increased self-awareness helps me deal with challenging scenarios, like talking about a bad grade, by giving me a better understanding of both me and the people I interact with.
