Often the way we refer to people with disabilities reflects our attitudes about them. For example, in the past people with cognitive delays or impairments were called "idiots or imbeciles" by the professional community. These labels then became a part of everyday speech and were used as slurs. How do we refer to people today with disabilities, in particular those with cognitive impairments? The debate rages on.
What is your reaction to this debate? What are the effects of labels? Provide a specific and well-supported response.
