Disruptive Innovation
Harvard Business School Professor, Clayton Christensen and colleagues have studied the market effects of innovation and the process of innovative practices. This work led to his study and publication in 2008 of Disrupting Class and why technology has not created a revolution in our public school system. His hypothesis is that companies and institutions have great difficulty innovating because of the power of their current market share to protect the status quo, or are unable to adapt to changing technology.
The growth in online technology is his primary example of the disruptive forces that occur when non customers will settle for less than perfect technologies. And through this shift in market share, the technology is improved and overcomes the existing technologies. Apple Computer and Sony are prime examples of how the green screen computers given to the non customer, the family and school markets and Apple’s development into the industry standard. The result is that large main frame manufacturers, such IDAC and IBM no longer exist or compete in their original markets.
Will the current classroom suffer the same fate as the IDAC and IBM main frame? Explain what will cause this shift that will transform them or what will stop the shift and cause things to remain the same.
