EDU 629 week 3 Assignment
Week 3 - Assignment
Long Term English Leaner (LTEL) - Mock Shadowing
This assignment is your opportunity to practice some of the strategies found in your text, English Language Learners (ELL) Shadowing as a Catalyst for Change.
Your assignment must include:
- The completed template with your observations.
- A paper describing the student’s strengths and challenges.
- A summary of your observations.
- Your recommendations to the teacher in the video and additional information you find in your research that addresses the student’s needs.
Your paper must be three to four pages in length, (excluding title and reference pages), include the completed template, and be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. In addition to the textbook and three sources provided, you must include at least two additional scholarly sources for your research.
Instructions
Use the “ELL Shadowing Protocol Form” template on page 119 and 120 to help you track what you see. A template is provided for download on the ELL Shadowing as a Catalyst for Change Companion Website. (Follow the directions on the page and then select “Chapter Resources.” Scroll down to the first link in the handout section.)
Next, view the video of an adult ESL classroom, Observing Standards-in-Action: ESL Classroom Lesson and use the information provided to help inform you on any one student’s academic progress. The English Language Arts testing data will not be available to you, especially because these are adult learners and not subject to this kind of testing. Therefore, you will have to infer academic progress solely via observation. You will also review the three sources listed below on long-term English learners, and incorporate these resources in your report:
- Preventing Long Term English Learner (LTEL) Status With Strategic Focus [Video file].
- “The Difficult Road for Long-Term English Learners”
- Reparable Harm: Fulfilling the Unkept Promise of Educational Opportunity for California’s Long Term English Learners
You will be evaluated on the following:
- How you describe the student’s strengths and challenges
- Your tone and professionalism in your mock–shadowing report
- The thoroughness of the observation Figure 7.3
- Your provided research-based recommendations for the student to the teacher in the video, which includes the research presented here
- Additional research that you seek out
Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
