Week 2 - Journal

BabaKiueria: A Satire on Culture, Colonization, and Stereotypes

This week’s journal begins with a short film entitled BabaKiueria (barbeque area), which is a satire on how colonizers fail to fully understand the natives and as a result develop a gross misunderstanding of the native (now minority) population.  As you watch this film, feel free to laugh but also jot down why you laughed. Think about how the natives are represented here and what it may say about our understanding of minority populations.  Have we grossly misunderstood or characterized entire cultures as “slow,” “lazy,” “nice but not reliable”?  Also take a look at the native population and how they are timid about revealing how they really feel to the point of blanket compliance. Did any part of this film make you feel uncomfortable? Jot down these moments and reflect why you felt uneasy.

Your journal should be one to two pages in length. Consider the questions above and share some of your notes. Next, in recognizing that this film highlights the power of stereotypes, both in how they are created and how damaging they can be; think about how BabaKiueria will help you reframe your perceptions of others. Discuss how you might help persuade your future students away from using stereotypes.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your journal entry.
