Week 1 - Assignment

Facilitating Group Work

This assignment has two parts.

Part One: Go to the Ashford University Library, and research the benefits of oral language in second language acquisition. Some search engine recommendations include:

  • Oral fluency neglected      component communicative language classroom (Project Muse)
  • Oral language development      (ERIC/ EBSCO Host)
  • Supporting English Language      Learners (ELL) and oral development (ProQuest)

Locate two or more full-text, peer-reviewed sources, and respond to the following prompt in one to two pages, excluding title and reference pages, and using APA format:

Learning a language takes concentration. Group work provides too much distraction. How can I, as a professional educator, subject my students to peer-related activities when I know that learning is not taking place?

Include a description of the benefits of oral language in second language acquisition in your response.

Part Two: Develop a lesson plan using art (poem, picture, play, song, or performance) to support oral language development.

Think about how you will use art to help stimulate oral language development. You will have to explain how the activity will be carried out. Make sure it is detailed enough that a substitute teacher could follow your plans as you intended. You will also need to include a sample of, or link to, the art that will be discussed. Finally, you will need to describe how this activity supports oral language development via group work.

A sample activity, to get you started:
Pick a famous work of art painting and ask small groups to create a story for the painting. Have everyone share one or more ideas about the painting to make it a complete story that contains the following:

  • A beginning, middle, and end.
  • At least one central character      (in or out of the painting).
  • An established location.
  • A plot development (at least      one conflict is established).

Each group shares their story with the class collectively.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
