ED5570: Week 9 Discussion 1: Financing Operations and Revenue Diversification

Financing college and university operations has always been a challenge. Thelin (2019)

notes that “one of the most perplexing historical riddles in American higher education is

how colleges planned and then implemented their annual operating budgets” (p. 98).

Thelin identifies some of the creative ways in which institutions have generated financial

support and discusses the role of philanthropists, foundations, and corporate partners in

higher education.

For this discussion, reflect on the economic and legal pressures that faced colleges and

universities in the 1970s and 1980s, and how institutions responded. Compare these

strategies to those used by institutions today. Support your response with current higher

education literature.
