WU Comp I – Major Essay #2 – Expository5 A. do we have for the problem?¾ pages minimum (6 - 8 pages preferred), MLA-style, Times New Roman 12-point font, 1” marginsRough draft with cover page due Saturday, Oct 21 Our writing purpose: The goal of expository writing is to explain or inform our audience about a specific topic.  For the audience, the topic is often vague or abstract on the surface.  Our job as writers is to move the audience from vague to specific.  Successful expository writing takes a broad topic that the audience may have a general knowledge of and fills in the gaps with specific examples and analysis.  Our purpose is to show the audience the topic – to inform the audience.  We are not writing to persuade…yet. The assignmentselect one of the following options

  1. Define      a specific genre or type of music, movies, literature, clothing style,      internet culture, car, etc.  For example, how does one define “horror      movies”?

2. Gladwell’s essay (411 in our textbook) argues that social media prevents any real social activism today reminiscent of the 1960s.  Take his idea in one of two directions: B. What do you see as the primary social problem of our time period?  What possible solutions do we have for this problem?Although social media has several positive aspects to it, focus in on one primary problem that is unique to social media sites.  What possible solutions3. Select a topic you care about with which you have personal experience and a reasonable amount of credibility.  Create an essay for the topic by shaping it into either a compare/contrast, a definition, a cause/effect, or a problem/solution essay. Note: a technical or process essay is not an option. Strategies:

  • Draw      primarily from your own examples, experience, and analysis.

  • It’s possible to do so even without       the use of 1st person
  • Qualify      all claims with examples and analysis

  • Strong evidence will support an       assertive and direct voice
  • Be      careful not to oversimplify the case – show respect for complexity

  • Complex problems have no easy       solutions
  • Aggressive      writing will argue the issue in black and white.

  • Assertive writing will explain and       analyze the shades of gray.
  • “They      say…” and “some say…” (and all other variations) are not valid examples.
  • Avoid      plurals.  Plurals tend to be vague.  Specify and analyze.
  • Maintain      objectivity.  The intent of this essay is to inform—not to pass judgment      or argue.

Added requirement: include at least one piece of research supporting your analysis. This will require an annotated bibliography, due with your rough draft. See the directions on the next pages for creating an annotated bibliography. The essay will also need to follow MLA formatting for citations in the body of the essay and on a separate Works Cited page. Any essay with undocumented research will automatically earn a zero.
