  • Recognizing biases and dependence and independence in the media

Task

Step 1 - Make your own post to this discussion - Due Tuesday, October 15th @ 11:59pm

Your goal is to find a news article about a real-life situation where there is Independence or Dependence between two categorical variables. 

Hint: most news reports about social injustice, bias, race, etc are examples of Dependence between two variables. Finding an example of Dependence will probably be easier than finding an example of Independence. Remember that Dependence is really saying that "because event A occurred the probability of event B is now higher (or lower)". Independence means that no matter if event A happened or not, the probability of event B happening remains the same. 

Once you understand Independence you can't un-see it in the media. :)

Note: contrived examples of Independence or Dependence won't count for credit. You need to find a real-life example of Independence or Dependence from the media. If you have questions about your example, your instructor can guide you.
