(1)     3-6 page paper (3 if working alone + 6 if w/partner)

1. 1-2 pgs: About playwright & play (bio, when written, etc.)   Plot of play (what happens in the play?) 
2. Theme of play (what is it about?)
3. 1-2 pgs: SCHEEP research for Time/Place of play (Society, Culture, History, Economics, Education, Politics) 
4. BE SPECIFIC FOR THE TIME & PLACE
5. 1-2 pgs: discussing how the Theme & Research led to your concept for the design elements (Set, Lights, Sound, Costume, Props)                        How will you use this in your designs? (Be Specific!) (2)     Two Detailed Lists: Set Plot & Costume Plot (1 if alone)

Design Project Information

Read Chapter 9: The Art of Design in The Art of Theatre .

You may design the play used for your Acting Project scene -or- a play discussed with me. You may work with scene partners -or- alone.

If working alone: design either the set or 6 costumes for visual presentation.

Read the entire play if possible! This informs choices you make for creating the visual presentation of the one scene you fully illustrate.

SCHEEP research must be specific for the Time & Place in which you set the play. You are researching for the play as a whole ~ not a single character! 

Your Design Concept should have specific reasons for your ideas/choices. Use the plot, theme, characters, and research to support your concept.

Think about the needs of the play; the central metaphor you are using to help tell the story of your play; and the social, cultural, historical, educational, economic and political aspects you (and/or the playwright) have incorporated into the play. These will help determine your ultimate guiding image.

Describe the Lighting and Sound choices you would make to enhance your scene design & costuming.

Be creative and artistic but ~ don’t “overdesign” . . . figure out what is necessary to tell your story well without extraneous ‘clutter’.

Include ideas and examples of colors and textures in your set/costume designs. If you need a particular style or period of furniture, prop or costume ~ include a picture to give us the details. Success lies in the specific details!

Posterboard w/ pictures, 3-D diarama, computer Powerpoint, drawings or computer graphics . . . all are acceptable ways to present your design ideas. Let your imagination and creativity flow!

Prepare & REHEARSE your Design Project Presentation. Know who will be covering specific topics and in what order. You do not need to read your paper ~ but do give us select information about the playwright/play; theme; design concept including central metaphor & guiding image; your SCHEEP research including Time & Place. Show us the Ground Plan and discuss the set & costumes you visually present to the class. Keep us interested!
