The most important finding I learned from this week's video was the difference between being a leader and showing leadership. I really liked the comparison between being a parent and parenting. Just because someone is a parent does not automatically mean they know how to be a good parent, and I believe the same idea applies to leadership.
Throughout my life, I have worked for different companies, and I have seen this many times. Some people did not have a management position or an important title, but they showed more leadership than the people who were officially in charge. They helped their coworkers, solved problems, and were often the reason things kept running smoothly. Other employees listened to them because they trusted and respected them, not because they had to.
At the same time, I have also worked with managers who had authority but did not know how to lead people. Employees followed their instructions because they were afraid of getting in trouble or losing their jobs. They did what they were told, but that did not mean they respected those managers or believed in their decisions, and that makes a big difference.
I believe a title can give someone authority, but it cannot automatically give them respect. Real leadership is about how someone treats people, listens to their concerns, and sets an example. A good leader should be willing to support the team, accept responsibility when things go wrong, and earn people's trust through their actions and life experiences. When employees feel respected, they are more likely to care about their work and give their best effort. I personally believe that is what makes leadership different from simply being in charge.
