Animal Behavior Zoo Project: Spring 2023

An Ethogram Behavioral Analysis of the Gorilla Gorilla (Gorilla)

Brief Experimental Introduction

My experiment involved observation and recording of the behavior and movement of a Gorilla in

the Atlanta Zoo for a total of 90 minutes.

Weather and Habitat

During the study, the gorillas were observed from 2:45pm to 4:15pm. There is a 70 degree

temperature and a 15 mph wind. The skies are clear and the humidity is 30%. In Atlanta Zoo's

Gorilla exhibit, the gorilla lived in an area of 1.7 acres. An open field surrounds this area.

Animal Description

In addition to having a dense black coat, the gorilla had long arms, a short, wide neck, and large

shoulders. His face was hairless and black, and he had short, pointed ears, and a flat, black face.

Standing on two legs, he stood about 5.5 feet high, and weighed 350 pounds.

Behavioral analysis:

The gorilla was not very active this day. The subject spent most of the Day sitting and eating. His

movement was met with a continuation of sitting and eating. Towards the end the study however,

for departure the gorillas played.
