Healthcare disparities In the United States are tied to income, race, ethnicity, and geography, leaving nearly half of Americans struggling to access or afford quality care.  As I mentioned in a previous post, I grew up in the Philadelphia region and was surrounded with multiple choices for healthcare.  These choices were also accessible offering a wide range of services and expert care in any specialty that may be needed.  It was heartbreaking for me to realize that many citizens lack access to basic care services, with specialty services often being even more limited. 

Research articles and data seem to indicate that socioeconomic disadvantaged individuals and communities experience more disparities in care when compared to individuals in more favorable socioeconomic situations (Braveman, 2025, p. 4).  In my own limited experience, it does appear that healthcare resources are more available to those with insurance and with better resources.  I distinctly remember patients being deemed “non-compliant” for not taking their medications when they simply were unable to afford them or get to the pharmacy to pick them up.

Advanced practice providers will be able to fill many positions and support communities that need providers.  The use of telehealth may also help bridge the gap for remote and rural areas where infrastructure is not available and accessibility to services is a concern.  Implementing advanced practice providers throughout communities has been shown to positively affect patient outcomes by reaching more individuals and providing holistic, patient-centered care (Kra-Friedman et al., 2025, p. 6).
