Discussion Assignment Four
During this course, you will participate in six graded Discussions. Discussions give you an opportunity to reflect upon, process, and elaborate on the Learn section material. A thread addressing the discussion prompt (at least 400 words). Each thread must contain at least two peer-reviewed references, one Scripture reference, and must be at least 400 words. Current APA format is required for citations, and a reference list in current APA format is required at the conclusion of each thread. You must also use proper grammar as outlined in the APA manual.
Discussion Prompt
Consider and address each of the following questions:
• Do we as educators need to differentiate our instruction? • Should teachers at all levels be expected to differentiate their instruction? • What is the best approach for addressing the needs of a diverse student
population when designing curriculum? • How should curriculum designers align and address the need to meet
specific standards but also differentiate instruction?

Consider and address each of the following questions:
Do we as educators need to differentiate our instruction? Should teachers at all levels be expected to differentiate their instruction? What is the best approach for addressing the needs of a diverse student population when
designing curriculum? How should curriculum designers align and address the need to meet specific standards
but also differentiate instruction?
Do we as educators need to differentiate our instruction? Absolutely! As educators it is our duty to differentiate instruction for students. Unfortunately, many teachers do not understand the premise of differentiation. Teachers who differentiate instruction understand all students need to be engaged in the learning through different methods while implementing a variety of support systems and different levels of complexity (Tomlinson, 2014). Teachers who differentiate are willing and have the ability to meet every child where they are and move them forward in their learning.
Should teachers at all levels be expected to differentiate their instruction? Yes! Teachers who differentiate understand that instruction should not be standardized but recognize all of their students are unique and have different needs. Learning is not a one-size fits all but all should have learning tailored to fit them. This idea is not limited to one level since children have multiple levels of education they have to navigate. Teachers who differentiate are “students of their students” which creates a powerful dynamic between the teacher and student (Tomlinson, 2014, p.4).
What is the best approach for addressing the needs of a diverse student population when designing curriculum? To successful address the needs of diverse learners, educators have to ensure the curriculum has meaning and sense (Tomlinson, 2014). Students have to make connections and the ability to transfer the information to different settings. Students need to have a personal connection to the material; they need to understand the how and why while connecting it to their own life experiences.
How should curriculum designers align and address the need to meet specific standards but also differentiate instruction? In order for curriculum designers to align curriculum that meets the standards as well as provides the opportunity for differentiation, they must identify which standards are emphasized, any gaps that may be present, and is necessary for all standards to be taught and assessed (Lalor, 2016). After analyzing the standards, learner centered activities can be developed such that teachers have the occasion to focus on instruction and assessment that will be most beneficial for their students; meeting the student where they are in that moment.
