Discussion Assignment Four
During this course, you will participate in six graded Discussions. Discussions give you an opportunity to reflect upon, process, and elaborate on the Learn section material. A thread addressing the discussion prompt (at least 400 words). Each thread must contain at least two peer-reviewed references, one Scripture reference, and must be at least 400 words. Current APA format is required for citations, and a reference list in current APA format is required at the conclusion of each thread. You must also use proper grammar as outlined in the APA manual.
Discussion Prompt
Consider and address each of the following questions:
• What is your biggest take-away from the Brown et al. (2014) text Make It Stick? • What is concept-based curriculum and how does it differ from skill-based or fact-
based curriculum? What aspects of the concept-based curriculum model do you agree or disagree with?
• In your opinion, did Jesus teach primarily through a conceptual or skill- based/factual lens and why?

EDUC 872- Week 4 - Discussion Thread: Concept-Based Instruction
In delving into Brown et al.'s (2014) "Make It Stick," my most significant takeaway is the
challenge it poses to conventional beliefs about learning. The text compellingly argues against
the efficacy of rote repetition, emphasizing evidence-backed strategies for effective learning
(Brown et al., 2014). This has encouraged me as my approach to teaching is based on
evidence-based teaching and learning.
Concept-based curriculum, as opposed to skill-based or fact-based curriculum, centers on
fostering a deep understanding of underlying concepts, encouraging critical thinking and
application. Unlike skill-based learning, which often focuses on procedural knowledge, and
fact-based learning, which prioritizes memorization, concept-based curriculum aims for a more
holistic comprehension of subject matter.
I find the concept-based curriculum model appealing due to its emphasis on cultivating a deeper
understanding of the material. This approach aligns with the principles discussed in "Make It
Stick," advocating for learning strategies that promote retention and application over time
(Brown et al., 2014). While I agree with the concept-based model's focus on critical thinking, I
also recognize potential challenges in its implementation, such as the need for thoughtful design
and effective assessment methods.
Transitioning to a more personal perspective, when considering whether Jesus primarily taught
through a conceptual or skill-based/factual lens, I lean towards a conceptual approach. Jesus
often employed parables and stories to convey deeper spiritual truths, emphasizing understanding
and application over mere rote memorization. While there were instances where specific skills or
facts were imparted, the overarching teaching style seems rooted in fostering a profound
conceptual understanding that transcended mere factual knowledge.

EDUC 872- Week 4 - Discussion Thread: Concept-Based Instruction
A Biblical verse that resonates with the emphasis on deep understanding and conceptual
learning, in alignment with the teaching style attributed to Jesus, is Matthew 13:13 which says,
"This is why I speak to them in parables: 'Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they
do not hear or understand”’ (The International Bible, 1978/2011).
This verse highlights the intentional use of parables by Jesus to convey deeper truths,
emphasizing the need for a spiritual understanding that goes beyond surface-level observation or
memorization. It aligns well with the concept-based approach to learning and the recognition that
true understanding requires a more profound engagement with the material.
In conclusion, "Make It Stick" has spurred a reevaluation of my teaching methods, emphasizing
the importance of concept-based learning. The concept-based curriculum model resonates with
me for its focus on deep understanding, aligning with the principles discussed in the text (Brown
et al., 2014). When considering the teaching approach of Jesus, a conceptual lens appears to
dominate, reflecting a pedagogical emphasis on profound understanding and application.

concept-based curriculum is thorough and insightful, emphasizing the benefits of fostering a
deeper understanding through higher-level thinking (Brown et al., 2014).
Your reflection on Jesus primarily teaching through a conceptual lens aligns with the approach of
using parables and guiding followers to a deeper understanding. A relevant Biblical reference to
support this perspective is found in Matthew 13:13: "This is why I speak to them in parables:
'Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand'" (The
International Bible, 1978/2011). This verse reinforces the idea that Jesus intentionally used
parables to convey deeper truths, engaging his listeners in a way that required thoughtful
reflection and a conceptual understanding of the spiritual messages he conveyed.

Good Saturday Morning, Kaylee,
Your insightful post underscores the transformative impact of neuroplasticity on education,
emphasizing the profound influence high-quality instruction can have on a child's brain
development. The integration of concept-based curriculum is presented with clarity, showcasing
its departure from skills-based models and its potential to enhance student agency and
self-efficacy (Brown et al., 2014).
Your role as the PYP Coordinator and the application of conceptual learning in teaching the
American Revolution vividly illustrate the meaningfulness of this modality in fostering critical
thinking and pattern recognition. Drawing parallels between Jesus's instructional methods and
the diverse needs of His disciples and the general population adds depth to your analysis. In
alignment with your perspective, a relevant Biblical reference is Matthew 13:13: "This is why I
speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do

conceptual teaching methods for broader understanding.
