Use Simmel’s concept of the tragedy of culture to think about the Hollywood film industry.  According to Simmel, the growth of objective culture outpaces the ability of individuals to produce, absorb and control it. It seems to have become increasingly difficult for Hollywood to produce original films—remakes, sequels, and formulaic genre films are common.  Can Simmel’s concept of the tragedy of culture explain why there is so little original material coming out of Hollywood?  What social forces contribute to this situation? Can it be transcended?  What are the consequences for filmgoers and the artists involved?
