In nearly every public opinion poll since the 1960s, Americans have expressed being a victim of a crime as being their top concern.  Why is their fear of death from homicide greater than fear of death from a health related issue or automobile accident?  Is this fear justified?  In what ways do the media influence public opinion?  How can this fear turn into public action?
